Framing: Right and Left

On a similar but different note as last week's blog post, the reporting on Afghanistan has exploded abruptly as of a few days ago, and particularly today- August 27th, 2021. What is stunning to note is the stark differences in messaging from the Democrats and Republicans on this issue. So much so, it's almost difficult to know what to focus on, whether to mourn or be angry, to be satisfied or unsatisfied with out response post-takeover by the Taliban. Shown on my twitter page (@EllisonRemy), the response from U.S. government officials has been absolutely insane. Democrats are pushing a narrative focused on mourning for the fallen American soldiers at the Kabul airport attacks, positive messaging surrounding Biden's efforts going forward with terrorists, and has largely steered away from direct blame on President Biden or his administration for any specific wrong-doings. If there are any, according to Democrats, its on President Trump and his administration.

 


Meanwhile, the opposite is true for Republicans. A few Republican leaders have called President Biden out directly on social media and in press conferences, claiming he is primarily to blame for the chaos in Afghanistan. Some congresspeople going as far as to call for Biden's impeachment or resignation. While one side is mobilized to continue efforts, the other doesn't feel as though the actions taken so far can be left unaddressed/unpunished. What is more valuable at this time? Continued efforts and mobilization to work on the situation or proper accountability for actions already taken? Is this outrage purely political, manufactured?

    This post is so fascinating! I find that these types of differences in framing, as you have shown above, have such an impact on society's attitudes about political events. It just goes to show that the source from which someone gets their information greatly impacts their opinions on the matter. I find this to come to fruition in my real life often, as I have family members that often get their news from one source. I've noted that those who get their information from FOX, and those who get their information from CNN, often have very different realities of what is going on.

What is the focus?

 What is the focus of prominent politicians on Twitter in this week of September 5th?  With Labor Day Weekend, wildfires and recall election in California, Texas abortion laws, rapidly rising COVID cases, aftermath of Hurricane Ida, the crisis in Afghanistan, and the upcoming 20th year anniversary of 9/11 , where are we? There are so many pressing domestic and international problems going on, it makes it difficult to even log into Twitter. Double Standard? Just Jokes?

                                        On both his personal and Congressional Twitter accounts, Representative Paul Gosar is in hot water after posting a video which shows an anime-style clip featuring Gosar violently attacking Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and then President Biden. Blacklash for posting and also his happiness with the video surfaced just minutes after it was posted. Many retweets posting in response from other members of Congress and prominent politicians: Rep Ted Lieu (D. CA), Rep Adam Schiff (D.
