Politics of Colin Powell-

News broke today that on October 18th, 2021, former-Secretary of State, Colin Powell has passed away. In the wake of his passing his family released a statement: "General Colin L. Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, passed away this morning due to complications from Covid 19. He was fully vaccinated" Almost immediately after the release of this statement, mass media outlets began circulating news surrounding the legacy Colin Powell left during the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks, his impact on the Black community, and mark on politics as a whole. Though, it was not long after this that the messaging swiftly changed- his cause of death and the implications. Reporters and outlets on Twitter have now began to focus on the fact and concern over Powell, a fully vaccinated person, dying of COVID-19. Fox News contributes, John Roberts, in a since-deleted tweet posted:

Comment similar to this surrounding concerns over the efficacy of COVID-19 vaccines began to overshadow the legacy of Powell, prompting tweets and articles in response claiming those comments are missing important context surrounding Powell's existing blood cancer condition being the reason, or how generally framing Powell's death as a COVID one is not accurate. However, what's missing are the comments on how sheerly inappropriate and ill-timed those comments were, just hours after his death.

Vice President Kamala Harris released a brief statement on the matter when asked about the skepticism about the vaccines after Powell's death: https://youtu.be/d37lsCfhRDw?t=1, stating: "today is not the day".
