Double Standard? Just Jokes?
Representatives from California Ted Lieu and Adam Schiff were quick to to mention the double standard noting respectively:
So, many raise the question of how deep the problem goes? What punishment, if any, should be made on Rep Gosar? Is there a double standard in Congress for Republicans? Is this just a harmless post? Where is the outrage from active Republicans in Congress about the issue?
Neither Minority leaders Kevin McCarthy nor Mitch McConnell have mentioned the incident, or any ramifications for Gosar. Even more right-leaning news outlets like Fox News or NewsMax have kept minimal coverage of the clip. This all leaving many questions to be answered about the seriousness and accountability members of Congress deal with matters like these. As Rep Lieu points out, and as many other Americans in the workforce would agree, its unlikely this would fly in any other workplace setting. Should/ will it fly here?
Wow this is the first time I'm hearing of this! It's interesting to read Rep. Ted Lieu's thoughts on this because I think we forget that in the simplest of terms..yes these people are co-workers. If this happened in just your average everyday office people would be in uproar and the person would be fired. Repercussions definitely need to happen in my opinion, that was just out of line and completely inappropriate for a public figure (also for anyone really). How do these politicians expect to see respect towards themselves and elected officials if they don't show it towards each other. I think this type of behavior is contributing to the violence we see like what happened on January 6th. Very interesting post Remy, thank you for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThis reminds me of Kathy Griffin holding a mock-severed head of President Trump back in 2017. Overall, I personally do not care what political affiliation a individual has... there's a clear line between jokes/humor and straight unprofessional, dark or deadly driven humor. There should be consequences for any side who crosses the line. Such as Kathy Griffin who was literally blacklisted but in all reality such a offense or act towards a acting President is a act of treason and the consequences should have been much dire. Goes to show how people in higher positions or well known status benefit from said status, receiving less penalty.
